Costa Rica is a democratic republic with a strong system of constitutional checks and balances. The country has enjoyed uninterrupted democracy since 1949, making it one of the most stable nations in Latin America.
Branches of Government:
- Executive Branch: Headed by the President (currently Rodrigo Chaves Robles), who serves as both head of state and government. Presidents are limited to a single 4-year term.
- Legislative Branch: 57-member unicameral Legislative Assembly, with members elected by proportional representation.
- Judicial Branch: Independent Supreme Court with 22 magistrates appointed by the Legislative Assembly for 8-year terms.
National Symbols
National Flag
Adopted in 1848, the flag features five horizontal stripes - blue, white, red, white, blue. The red stripe is twice as wide as each blue and white stripe.
Coat of Arms
Features three volcanoes representing the country's mountain ranges, with ships on each side symbolizing commerce. The seven stars represent the provinces.
National Anthem
"Noble patria, tu hermosa bandera" (Noble homeland, your beautiful flag). Adopted in 1853, with music by Manuel María Gutiérrez.
National Flower
Guaria Morada (Purple Country Girl, Guarianthe skinneri), an orchid species declared national flower in 1939.
National Tree
Guanacaste (Enterolobium cyclocarpum), declared in 1959, known for its massive canopy and distinctive ear-shaped seed pods.
National Bird
Clay-colored Thrush (Turdus grayi), locally called "Yigüirro", chosen in 1977 for its distinctive song.
